Want to Live the Laptop Lifestyle?

Living the laptop lifestyle is something that appeals to a lot of us.


We all crave it as mums as the traditional job market well sux, I know this because I spent the best part of 20 years climbing the corporate ladder, dealing with egotistical man clubs and female jealousy that would do anything to knock you out of your position.


As mums we want it all, we want the job, the career, the family and to be present for them all. Oh and the wife …. as women we place too much on ourselves, but seriously would we have it any other way?


No.


So when I started my business, I was engulfed with information about how to make $5K in a month or $10K in a matter of 10 days or $50K in a matter of minutes…..

Ok, I may have exaggerated it slightly, but what these blog articles failed to mention is that these entrepreneurs, coaches, and business strategists forget to highlight is the dedicated hard work, long hours, potential health issues, financial insecurity (especially in the beginning), and sheer fear that many of us have had or continue to experience on a daily (even hourly) basis.


It’s not all laying on the beach, margarita in hand, doing yoga in the middle of the day while eating organic fruit and drinking a chai latte….. Where the reality is that you are working 7 days a week, hustling your butt off and trying to have a client call while making trips to the grocery store or making mac and cheese that is going to feed the kids for 3 days ….. and in your 2am waking hour you are thinking that your $100 ROI (return on investment) is actually not that sweet.


Pulezzz, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love what I do and would NOT go back to the doldrums of corporate life however I just want to send a message it is not for the faint hearted.


Don’t think that you’ll find everything at your fingertips within 30 seconds or that you’ll be rolling in money next month without hardly trying. Well, that may be the case for some of you, but I doubt it – there is no overnight millionaire unless you have one Powerball.


Ok, so the point of this blog is to share my wisdom…..


One of them would be and I have posted it before. Don’t wait until everything is perfect…. I’m guilty of being a perfectionist. But with my husband’s advice I started when I wasn’t ready, I was going to ease into in the new year. Bear in mind, when I started my business I thought I can type documents for people, well hey I have spent my career swamped in administration so how hard can it be. However, the course of my VA career quickly changed, and I very quickly turned into a tech VA, likely for me I knew a lot about tech, social media and systems.


So, stop sweating the small stuff, unless you have 5 clients to start with, you will have time to be able to rework your website, your systems etc. JUST START AND GET IT DONE LATER! Do the basics!


This is also leads me to my second piece of advice, Don’t get Shiny Object Syndrome or FOMO that is (fear of missing out). There is sooo much information out there, stop getting caught up with everyone’s information and courses, webinars, blogs, you should do’s and do not’s.


Pick your systems and master them. When you are successful you might outgrow some systems, but you may not. I know a client that went from Mailchimp to Convertkit to Ontraport in a matter of a couple of months – now seriously they all do the same thing!


My suggestion is to do your research, spend an hour (or more or less if your little heart desires) on it, commit to a program, then move on. Doing your due diligence and research on the wants and needs essential to your business is fine, just don’t forget to choose and progress FORWARD. The reality is that the time spent too long in this stage is a form of procrastination since you’re waiting for everything to be perfect before starting. Everything is temporary so don’t sweat the small stuff.


Seriously.


Another that comes to mind is being consistent and committed. Believe me this is the best words I can come up with. When you start, you have information overload and I so get that. Get some good systems, like I posted the other day I still have 2 diaries, plus my electronic one – it works for me and yep you guessed it I never miss a thing.

Not even a lead!


The other thing is that burnt out is a real thing. I have heard of so many people that have suffered from burn out and had to shut down their business because they had too many fingers in too many pies and didn’t do any of them particularly well.

So, I am going to go into boundaries. Have Them and Make Them.


Oh, what a juicy topic this is. Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries — what a funny concept. If you’re anything like me, you probably either thought or currently think these are great to have but not necessary in the online world.


In the online world, we are always connected (and it’s awesome). We get that little spike of adrenaline, euphoria or whatever it is that makes you happy when you get that new text message, when you complete a small task for your favourite client. . Sure, you may feel like a great person, but you are slowly and surely showing your clients what boundaries they can experience with you.


Don’t let them ring you at all hours of the night, work weekends, if you don’t want to. Set boundaries, I promise you won’t regret it, and you can thank me later.


The last but definitely not least piece of advice is, invest in yourself. I don’t mean to these 2 day conferences that cost $5K that is all the rage - don't waste your money. I mean a little in your education as no business survived without upskilling and learning; little on a massage and a facial if that is what you like to do; go get some online courses; go by a new dress for your next client meeting; or you can simply hire a mentor like me that will teach you everything you need to know about becoming a VA; a tech VA or to teach you how to do social marketing for your business so you can create success fast.
